WSN Construction Celebrates 25 Years

Innovative Construction Tempered with Tradition – WSN Construction celebrates their 25th anniversary.

WSN Construction was founded in 1996 as W.S. Nicholls to meet the demand for quality contractors in Ontario’s industrial market. Leveraging their combined experience on complex projects, the founders took the leap to establish the business primarily as a piping contractor in the high-pressure gas, cogeneration, and industrial market segments.

Some of WSN’s early projects included 30-megawatt cogeneration plant expansions in Nipigon and Kapuskasing, Ontario. WSN also completed equipment installations at Sleeman Brewing, Dare Foods, and Casco (now Ingredion) new evaporator plant.

As WSN continued to grow and innovate, success followed, leading to larger and more complex projects. One milestone was connecting the Nacan Wet Mill Starch Plant to a 52-million-litre-per-year ethanol plant. WSN self-performed all major trades – piping, electrical, instrumentation, millwrighting, iron work – all on a fast-tracked timeline. Another milestone was the Dufferin Biogas Transfer Station in 2001, which led to several other related projects. Work on the Toyota Utilities Plant, Sudbury Wastewater Treatment Facilities and Biosolids Treatment Facility, and Covanta Durham York Energy from Waste Plant, make for an impressive portfolio of projects over the years.

With an eye on expansion, WSN broke into the municipal wastewater and water treatment market by winning a contract with Canada’s largest wastewater plant, Ashbridges Bay, to expand the “D” plant for the city of Toronto. As a result of its success, this project opened many additional opportunities in the field and propelled our company forward.

From the very beginning, WSN’s founders understood that construction is a service industry. This concept was at the core of the company’s philosophy: be the best at what we do. Their mission was to earn repeat business through continuous improvement, and that drive has only increased over the past 25years.

Some from the first generation of WSN employees are still with the company, and several others have been with them over 20 years! That longevity is a testament to their strong company culture and the depth of their experience. Congratulations to all WSN’s employees for 25 successful years. As we honor their history and the hard work of everyone who has contributed, we look forward to continuing their pursuit of innovative construction tempered with tradition well into the future.
